What is an address for service?
An address for service is the correspondence address you give the IPO. It's where examination reports, opposition notices, and other official communications are sent.
Is an address for service legally required?
Yes. Since 1 January 2021, the IPO requires an address for service in the UK, Gibraltar or the Channel Islands (the Isle of Man is also accepted) for all new trade mark applications. A virtual business address is accepted as long as it's a valid address where letters can be delivered and read.
How do I enter your address on my UK IPO application?
Our address goes in your owner details. On the UK IPO online application, use Change next to your name and address, and enter our address. Keep your own name as the owner. Please don't add Staylo as a representative or another owner, as we provide an address only and don't act on your behalf.
I live outside the UK. Can I still use this?
Yes. Overseas applicants need a UK address for service, and our overseas packages cover this.
I already have a trade mark. How do I change my address to Staylo's?
Use IPO Form TM21A ("Update to current applicant or owner's details"). There's no fee. Fill in your trade mark number(s) and our address, and email it to forms@ipo.gov.uk. The form is on the GOV.UK page for changing an owner's name, address or email.
I added Staylo as a representative by mistake. What should I do?
Email us and we'll point you in the right direction. The IPO has a free email process for removing a representative from a trade mark.
Can I use my home address instead?
You can, but it will then form part of the public trade mark register. Many applicants choose a professional address for service specifically to avoid this.
What happens if I miss an IPO deadline?
IPO letters carry deadlines, and failing to reply to an examination report in time may result in your application being withdrawn or refused. We notify you as soon as correspondence arrives and forward it to you, but responding is your responsibility.
Is this the same as a Registered Office Address?
Not exactly. A registered office address is your company's official legal address with Companies House. An address for service is for IPO trade mark correspondence. Many businesses use Staylo for both, keeping their personal address off every public register.
