Do I Need a Registered Office Address If I'm a Sole Trader

Do I Need a Registered Office Address If I’m a Sole Trader?

No – sole traders do not need a registered office address. The registered office requirement comes from the Companies Act 2006 and applies specifically to limited companies and LLPs registered with Companies House; sole traders are not incorporated and therefore have no registered office obligation of any kind.

What sole traders need instead

Sole traders still need to display a business address in specific contexts, even without a formal registered office requirement. This includes an address for HMRC Self Assessment registration, an address shown on invoices and any official business letters (a requirement under trading disclosure regulations), and, if applicable, an address on the ICO register for data protection purposes.

Where the confusion comes from

Because limited company directors are used to hearing about ‘registered office’ requirements, many assume the same rule applies once they start trading under their own name. It doesn’t – the distinction matters because a sole trader has no separate legal identity from the individual, so there’s no company record for Companies House to hold an address against in the first place.

Should a sole trader still use a business address anyway

Even without a legal registered-office obligation, most sole traders benefit from a dedicated business address for the same reason limited company directors do: it keeps a home address off invoices, marketing materials, and public listings, while still meeting the practical disclosure requirements that do apply to them.
